The official information on the available positions and on the applications can be found in the SIMN PhD Application Summary.
Hereafter we summarize the most relevant information on the application:
POSITIONS
The SIMN Doctoral Course for the 36th cycle (years 2020-2023) offers 11 positions with scholarship (3 years duration each) composed as follows:
8 positions with open topic:
- 6 scholarships funded by the University of Padova
- 1 scholarship funded by the Dept. of Chemical Sciences on the Excellence Project NExuS (Nanochimica per l'Energia e la Salute)
- 1 scholarships funded by the CARIPARO Foundation
2 positions with assigned topic:
- 1 scholarship funded by Dept. of Physics and Astronomy - DFA (Funds from the Project STARS EXODROP and from DFA) - Topic: Study and development of droplet microfluidic devices for biomedical applications - Abstract: The aim of the PhD project is the development of microfluidic devices for biological applications, mainly devoted to cancer diagnosis. Therefore, the project is focused on the microfabrication protocols optimization, on the production and characterization of droplets in microchannels and finally, on the biological validation of the microfluidic devices.
- 1 scholarship funded by Dept. of Molecular Medicine - DMM - Topic: New Biomaterials to engineer the tissue microenvironnment - Abstract:The project aims to develop new biomaterials to engineer human tissue-like microenvironments. Chemically- and physically-defined hydrogels will be designed and engineered, to mimic mechanical signals that cells experience in tissue niches and to create microenvironments where cell behaviour can be controlled. Possible applications are in the fields of organoid biology, tissue development and regeneration, disease study and cell-based therapies.
1 position reserved to a Higher-level apprenticeship contract:
- 1 research contract (3 years) funded by Efesto Innovation srl - Topic: Innovative catalysts and electrocatalysts for the abatement of pollutants- Abstract: The project aims at the development of innovative materials for the degradation of pollutants through catalysis and electrocatalysis. The applicability of this knowledge is both in the industrial and transport sectors, with the aim of offering ever better technologies for controlling emissions into the atmosphere, in accordance with increasingly restrictive regulations on the subject. These materials must be free of noble metals, and active at temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. The research consists of synthesizing new materials, characterising them structurally and analysing their functionality for pollutant degradation
REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible, the Candidate must possess a Master's Degree (or equivalent) on topics related to the SIMN PhD Program. The Candidate can be admitted to the evaluation procedure also if he/she does not yet possess the Master's Degree but it is mandatory to obtain it no later than September 30, 2020.
APPLICATION
The application must be done online at the following link, where detailed instructions for the application can be found. Deadline June 16, 2020 (13:00 CEST).

EVALUATION
The evaluation of the applications will be done in two steps:
1. evaluation of the thesis and of the CV (prepared exclusively with the SIMN CV Template) and the qualifications (40 pts / 100 pts)
- Thesis: 10 pts
- CV and qualifications: 30 pts
(to be admitted to step 2 a minimum score of 28 pts is required)
2. an oral interview (via Zoom), provided that step 1 is succesully passed (60 pts / 100 pts)
The interview will assess the competences of the Candidate about the basic theories and the techniques for the experimental study of microscopic and macroscopic properties of materials and of their synthesis, also through the discussion on his/her master thesis work and on the proposal of the PhD research project. It is important to propose a project in one of the Research Topics of the SIMN PhD Program with a potential Supervisor within the Academic Board of the PhD Program. Candidates applying for the Assigned-Topic Positions will be required to demonstrate their expertise on those topics.
>>> Due to the Covid-19 emergency, all the interviews will be done via remote meeting with Zoom.
