POSITIONS

The SIMN Doctoral Course for the Cycle 38 Extended Call (years 2023-2026) offers 6 positions with Scholarship (3 years duration each) composed as follows:

PREREQUISITES

To be eligible, the Candidate must possess a Master's Degree (or equivalent) on topics related to the SIMN PhD Program. The Candidate can be admitted to the evaluation procedure also if he/she does not yet possess the Master's Degree but it is mandatory to obtain it no later than January 31, 2023.

APPLICATION

The application must be done online at the following link, where detailed instructions on the application can be found. Deadline November 28, 2022 (1:00 PM CET).

The documents must be attached in PDF format. The application and the attached documents are submitted authomatically by closing the online procedure. So no hard copy of the application and of the documents must be sent to the office.

EVALUATION

The evaluation of the applications will be done in two Steps for a total score of max 100 pts:

STEP 1 - QUALIFICATION (max 40 pts)

This Step evaluates the Master thesis, the CV (prepared exclusively with the SIMN CV Template) and other qualifications with the following scores: 

  • Thesis: max 10 pts Applicants who already obtained the MSc degree (or equivalent) are required to submit a summary of the master thesis project of max. 2 pages (signed by the applicant) along with a copy of the thesis. Applicants waiting to be awarded the MSc (or equivalent) qualification by September 30, 2022 are required to submit a summary of the master thesis project (max. 2 pages) signed by both the applicant and the supervisor. The congruence of the thesis topic with respect to the Research Areas of the PhD Course will be evaluated.
  • Curriculum and qualifications: max 25 pts Applicants must submit their CV prepared mandatorily following the SIMN CV template. The CV must contain in particular: 1) for both the Bachelor (BSc) and Master (MSc) degrees, the transcript of records (ToR), which should report the grades for each exam, their average grade, the final grade, the duration of the degree and the enrollment date; 2)other qualifications that the Applicant considers relevant to the evaluation (publications, oral presentations at conferences, periods spent in Italian or foreign Universities or Research Laboratories, etc.)
  • Motivation Letter: max 5 pts the Motivation Letter should describe the Applicant's research interests, motivating in particular how these can be achieved within the SIMN PhD Course.

(to be admitted to Step 2 a minimum score of 28 pts in Step 1 is required)

STEP 2 - INTERVIEW (max 60 pts) 

This Step consists in an oral interview. The interview will assess the competences of the Candidate about the basic theories and the techniques for the experimental study of microscopic and macroscopic properties of materials and of their synthesis, through the discussion on:

  • Candidate's MSc thesis work
  • proposal of a PhD research project. It is recommended to propose a project in one of the Research Areas of the SIMN PhD Program with the Supervisor within the Academic Board of the PhD Program. As an example, a list of more specific Research Topics and of the corresponding supervisor can be found here

Candidates applying for the Assigned-Topic Positions will be required to demonstrate their specific expertise on those topics.

The interviews can be done via remote meeting with Zoom.
